1. Introduction
In this report, the vulnerable population group which has been chosen is the female immigrant in the US. This group has been chosen as the vulnerable group in the US population due to many reasons which will be discussed here. The first reason is that a major section of the female immigrant come from a lower economic background and also works in the US in poor working conditions without any benefits, including health benefit. The second reason is that there is a huge cultural difference between the female immigrant and US own culture. This makes them uncomfortable and uncertain in different aspects, including the healthcare service, which leads to poor quality healthcare service given to them. The third reason is different kinds of biased treatment which happen with the female immigrant in the US. The fourth reason is that a large section of the female immigrant has low healthcare service or benefit. All these are the reasons; the female immigrant has been chosen as the vulnerable group of population in this report.
2. Outline the relevant group statistics related to the population as well as the impact of the group on women's health.
In this above graph, it can be seen that the ratio of female in the unauthorised or illegal immigrant in the US is lesser than the male population. In opposite, the ratio of female in legal migrant in the US is more than the male population. This also means that this legal female population is also eligible for the healthcare benefits and services that are provided to the other citizens in the US. Still, there are a lot of issues faced by the female immigrant in the US, which will be discussed in the following sections.
In this above data, the death and missing cases of female legal immigrant have been give. It can be seen one of the big reason for the death in this above data is dehydration which happens as these female population are kept in a very poor working environment and also does not get proper nutrition which lead to their death. Other main concern is that the reason for the death of a significant portion of the female population is not known which is also another alarming factors for the female immigrant health in the USA as there can be a lot of potential reasons which can be responsible for the death of these female immigrants.
From the above graph, it can be seen that only 55% of the total female immigrant population has private healthcare insurance and other 29% relies only on public coverage insurance which does not cover many healthcare benefits. The remaining 22% of the population also does not have that public coverage which is an alarming factor as this section of the female faces a high risk of not getting any healthcare service as majorly this section also belong to the lower economic section of the society.
3. Analysis of the psychosocial needs of the immigrant female population
There are many psychological needs which the nurse practitioners have to consider delivering the immigrant female population and these psychosocial needs of the immigrant female population will be discussed. The first psychosocial needs are that these immigrant populations do not connect with the American culture and this social environment intimidates this group of the female population, and this hampers the treatment of this group of population. Therefore, this group need a healthcare environment which will give extra care and friendly environment for them. The second psychosocial need of this group of population is need assurance as they lack confidence in themselves as a large section of this group belong to lower income earning population and this makes them less confident about their rights and action they take to solve any medical issue.
The third need is the fear of the government policies and deportation even within the legal immigrant. This fear is also stopping them from taking the healthcare service provided by Nurse practitioners. The fourth need is the increase in awareness about their healthcare rights and needs as large sections of the immigrant are not educated, and this makes unaware about their healthcare needs and rights. Therefore, there should be an increase in the healthcare rights and needs of the legal immigrants in the (USA American Psychological Association, 2019). The fifth psychosocial need is that reassuring them that there is a need for not only physical but also mental health as there are many cultural communities in the USA among immigrant who does not consider any types of mental illness like depression normal and the person who is known to be having those illnesses faces humiliation in their community (Betancourt et al., 2017). Therefore, the nurse practitioner should assure them that it is normal to have these mental illnesses and also assure that their treatment will be kept secret.
4. Discussion of the issues impacting culturally competent care delivery for the female immigrant group in the the US
There are also some issues that are impacting the culturally competent care delivery for the female immigrant group in the US, and these issues will be discussed here. The first issue is that communication barrier due to the Nurse practitioners and the patients having different native language and the immigrant not knowing English. This issue creates a vast problem for the treatment of these patients and this result in the wrong or inferior treatment of these patients. The second issue is that poor attitude about the modern healthcare as some of the immigrants belonging to some community believe in the traditional way of treatment instead of the new method of healthcare even when the traditional way of treatment sometime proved to be ineffective or even fatal (Choi et al., 2015). The third issue that is faced by the nurse practitioners is the superstitions of the immigrants, which prevent this group of female from taking healthcare service sometime or stop themselves from accepting any particular part of the treatment.
The fourth issue is that different culture of the nurse and female immigrant patient sometimes because lack of understanding or comfort level among them and this lower the quality of healthcare delivery to these female immigrants. The fifth issue is that some time some group of female immigrants are treated in a racial or biased way, and this prevents them from approaching the healthcare organisation and nurse practitioners. All these are the issues which are impacting the culturally competent care delivery for the female immigrant group in the US.
5. Description of the associated culturally and ethically competent care methods the Nurse Practitioners will employ in caring for the US immigrant female population
There are some methods which can be employed by the Nurse practitioners to provide associated culturally and ethically competent care to the female immigrant female populations, and these methods will be discussed here. The first method is keeping an open mind about other cultures and tries to communicate with these groups of patients. The second method is that Nurse practitioner should update themselves and know the basic cultural norms of the other major immigrant's native culture. The third method is to hiring a Nurse practitioner workforce in a healthcare organisation to increase the diversity of the workforce, which also helps these female immigrants feel more comfortable at these healthcare units. The fourth method is to have a proper system in which any type of racial biases is reported by both other colleagues and patients (Mass.edu, 2019). Also, proper action should be taken against the person being biased if the charges are proved to be true.
The fifth method is having an interpreter available in the healthcare unit who can understand the immigrant patient language and help in removing the communication barriers between the patients and nurse practitioners (Becerra et al., 2015). The sixth method is to understand the non-verbal body language of the immigrant patients as it can be a huge help in understanding the medical issue of the patient who is hesitating to accept the medical care of the nurse practitioners. The seventh method is to increase the flexibility of the treatment of the female immigrant patients to accommodate the beliefs or values of the patients, which will not harm the patient or hampers the treatment methods.
6. Conclusion
There are many findings of this report and these findings will be discussed here. The first finding is that there are many psychosocial needs of the female immigrant group which should be kept into mind by the Nurse Practitioners. Some of these psychosocial needs are increasing awareness about healthcare and its benefit among this immigrant group, increasing awareness about mental health and illnesses and making them comfortable in the healthcare setups. The second finding of this report shows that there are some barriers in the current healthcare environment which is causing issues for culturally competent care delivery for the female immigrant group in the US. These issues are communication barriers, biasness in treatment of these female immigrants, superstitions or tradition which are preventing them from getting proper healthcare service. The third finding of this report show that there are some methods by which these issues can be removed by nurse practitioners like updating themselves about other culture, understanding nonverbal body language or creating a good and accountable healthcare environment.
