Imagine you have been asked to participate in a race, but when you arrive on the day of the competition, you realize that the conditions of the race are not equal for each contestant. What can be done to remedy these unfair conditions to even the playing field for everyone? For this week's Discussion Spark, you are asked to consider this example as a metaphor for racial inequality.
Solution - Unequal opportunity race
Unequal opportunity race offers a glimpse of the discrimination that exists between Whites and the Blacks. Inequality is strongly built that White privilege continues to dominate. Towards the end of the video, it is mentioned that affirmative action can ensure equal opportunities to all. As I watched the entire video, I understood that there are several racial inequalities in terms of employment, education, housing privilege, degree of struggle, lifespan, segregation and racial profiling (Aapfvideo, 2010). These can pose serious problems in living conditions and sustainability of minority groups in the United States.
Perhaps, the government is curious to reduce poverty rates of the country but it is impossible with this unequal opportunity race. I find that the affirmative action is meant to expand the options and close the racial profiling gaps to a certain extent. This can be considered as an immediate option to address this problem. On the long run, widespread expansion of opportunity is the best solution to address all of these racial problems (Jenkins, 2007). As the opportunity gap is filled with expansion, it is feasible to reach a wider audience and also improve the rate of togetherness of the inhabitants of United States.
There are also other solutions to address the inequality issues mentioned in this video (Aapfvideo, 2010). Elimination of racial barriers on all possible arenas can be an excellent solution. For instance, the immigration reform can allow immigrants to obtain citizenship with the same labor protection laws that Whites receive. Likewise, the need-based grants will have to be increased so that students do not face financial barriers. Guaranteed healthcare system is appropriate to improve the lifespan and quality of life of people irrespective of the race they belong to (Jenkins, 2007).
As the government brings forward an integrated plan that unites all the races, this type of race does not exist.
