Slave Is the Fourth of July?

The slave is the Fourth of July is the title given on the speech given by Fredrick Douglass on 5 July 1852 in Corinthian Hall, Rochester, New York, addressing Rochester ladies Ánti Slavery Society. It is regarding the torture and exploitation given to slaves in the United States. Slaves were not entitled to freedom, liberty, and citizenship and are kept in a place where cannot escape. Douglass urges them to help the slaves in breaking free (Chan, 2015).

During that period of Independence Day, many stories and poems were written on a similar theme. Emma Lazarus wrote the sonnet " The New Colossus" inscribed on Statue of liberty. The last stanza was composed as a song by Irving Berlin, "Give Me You are Tired, Your Poor".

The poem Immigrants in our own land was written by Jimmy Santiago BACA. It is narrated by the slaves their empathy in a poem. They are always dreaming of better days and they are assured also time to time by the authority in command. Some are a craftsman and some are scholars. Councilors do counseling and try to adjust us to the new land. They take our old clothes and give us clothes like mechanics wear.

The old man who is living there knew the status of the new inhabitants of the land. They were assured of rehabilitating and completing their education and teaching them new trades. Their expectations were high initially but realized that they are making false promises. They were sent now to work as dishwashers at a meager amount. The commander says emphatically that this is a temporary phase but the blacks work with blacks and the whites work with whites and Indians by themselves. The authority does their business very well and how they're using the power of speech and language. The authority does not believe in the mixing of cultures like the trend in the old neighborhood and lets them stay apart to solve and fulfill their bad intentions. They were treating us the way they like breaking our doors whenever they like, shooting at us and arresting us. Doctors do not treat us and our minds also get locked without learning anything. It is the same situation in the neighborhood wherein laundry line clothes are drying in front of the cell. Sinks and toilets are flowing and heaters do not work. We were at the mercy of them. Slaves saw new migrants coming in with their dreams in their hearts with rolled mattresses on their shoulders. Immigrants with a new hair cut are thinking about to change their lives (Brown, 2016).

This how on account of powerful language and gestures and showing us false promises, our mind and body were controlled and we were made slaves.
