What was the news?
A fake notice calming that PUBG mobile game has been banned in India has been circulated all over the internet on various social media platform. This fake news was spread after a legal notice under the name of Govt. of India started circulating on Facebook and forwarded on Whatsapp as well. The false legal notice calming PUBG mobile is banned in India has multiple grammatical error and spelling mistakes in it. Naturally these mistakes in a legal notice started drawing the attention of many readers who eventually started investigation on the credibility and source of this news. Soon after the investigation started various PUBG fans checked the real fact behind the content and found this as fake news and a hoax. Notably there were two major mistakes that caught the attention of readers. For instance end of the notice there was a word like "majestrative" and the letter was authorised by "prejudge", both of these word does not exist in Indian judicial system, so obviously these mistakes developed provoked audience to find the credibility of the news.
What type of fake news it was?
This fake news can be considered as Satire or Parody as behind this fake news there was no intention to cause harm to the society but to fool (fooling PUBG fans) (Wardle, 2017). These types of fake news are generally developed with the intention of fooling people or a special community. This fake news of PUBG ban in India was developed with the intention of fooling PUBG fans.
How it affect our society?
People play a significant role in the ecosystem in communication. People have the tendency to possibly accept information and share them among groups without making a proper validation and this way people are adding more noise or confusion in the ecosystem. This ecosystem is getting over populated with time, thus people need to act more responsible and validates news before forwarding or sharing them online. Any message that is being coordinates consistently, it easily fools human brain because of overwhelming amount of information are flashing before people. When fake news is being circulated in different format, people often started consider the fake news as original, because people started developing the idea that they have seen same news several times a day so this must be real news (Attkisson, 2015). Fake news brings needless agitation and develops social unrest in the society.
How can we stop fake news?
Though, it is hard to identify fake news however, there are many ways in which social news can be stopped from being circulated in the society. Immediately after receiving a news, it's is important to read the whole story as often fake news comes with catchy headlines. After reading the whole story it is easy for people to identify silly mistakes which must not be present is original news. However, reading the whole content is not enough and reader must look for the source of the information. For instance, reader can check the site details, or any contact information and look for author name. Often creator of fake news sources provide incorrect information about the author, so author name can help the reader to find whether the news is developed and written by credible author or not? Further reader can look for information supporting sources of information and the credibility of news media that is circulating the news (Albright2017). For instance the fake news of PUBG ban in India was circulated from unknown sources; however people circulated the legal notice calming the PUBG mobile ban in India without making a proper fact check. The best way to stop fake news is to perform a fact check by checking the source of the information.
