Introduction

In the present society, the existence of economic imbalance is responsible for community segmentation on the basis of poverty. This segmentation is highly responsible for generation of negative emotion and as a matter of fact is also responsible for violence or involvement in activities that are harmful. As suggested by Duque, Magali, and McKnight, in order to fulfil the basic requirements, the financially weaker segment often adopt the crime path such as stealing, violating laws, and robbery (255). Hence, poverty can be referred to as the driving force responsible for crime. In these context, the individual associated with the factor of poverty often experience an internal conflict for deciding the acceptable set of behavior, values, and attitudes. When the individual fails to decide the acceptable societal norms, they tend to commit the crime. Also, according to Monuteaux, and Michael et al, when the standard of living of an individual gets deteriorated, then the individual commits crimes to meet the basic needs (235). There are many factors that are linked with property and instigate an individual to commit a crime such as, unemployment, financial crisis, high school dropout, population density, and drug use. In the US, the people with an income level less than the federal poverty threshold are found to have double the violent victimization rate as compared to the individuals having a higher income.

As indicated in the introductory section, this report will illustrate the relationship of poverty with the criminal set of behaviour among the community members. In this context, we will first discuss the delinquency of juvenile phase of life and link the factors appearing from poverty. This will help in shedding light on fact how it is responsible for commencing crime. In the final section of this report, we will conclude these descriptions by addressing the prime factors responsible to induce the people with poverty towards criminal activities.

Poverty and Juvenile delinquency

Crime can offer a path for the impoverished people to gain material (goods) that cannot be achieved through legitimate means. With this it means snatching, threatening, and stealing material along with the act of harming people, which is referred as crime. The factor responsible for such set of behaviour is linked with the factor of poverty, which deprives individual from accessing basic commodities and motiving to involve in act of crime (Enamorado, Ted, et al 134). For example, crime in the form of threat or force such as theft, robbery helps them to acquire valuable goods. Robbery is also considered as the second most violent criminal act. For most of the poor people, the value of committing crime excels the risk of being caught. The United States has been recorded as the third most income unequal nations resulting in an increased income gap as well as an increased population in prison (Walsh, Anthony, and Yun 50). Poverty has become a recurring factor to stimulate the juvenile delinquency and is getting worse day-by-day in the US. It has been mentioned by National Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN, US) that the youth between the age group of 16 to 24 years are mostly unemployed and tends towards committing a crime like aggravated assault and robbery. The report also outlines that American youth facing situation of poverty, are most likely to be involved in 25% of the violent victimization including the murder. Further, it has been identified that on an annual basis more than 2.5 million youth in the United States arrested for common crimes, one of such examples is larceny-theft (Monuteaux et al 235). The youth surviving in poverty gets external pressure to sustain in a community that lacks basic resources like food, financial support, job opportunities, education, and medical health services. This lack of resources prevents them from becoming successful, as it requires money. According to the report by the national juvenile justice network, the black African-American juveniles are kept in residential custody 5 times more than the white youth citizens in US (Duque et al 255).

Furthermore, the report by Walsh et al states that an average full-time salary an African American is approximately 85% to that of white women workers and 72% of the income of Caucasian counterparts (50). These statistics reveal that the system of unequal payment to minorities, is eventually responsible for making it harder for them to fulfill their dream of achieving success. Further, in order to maintain stability with this unequal income, the youth of minority communities diverted toward crime.

Factors responsible for criminal activities

Poverty leads to mental illness and stress in an individual which eventually results in the commitment of robbery, theft and other violent activities. Apart from mental stress, another important relationship between crime and poverty is the lack of basic education. The poor people do not have sufficient money to provide education to their children, which leads to a situation of inferior education in them. The youth residing in poverty fall into the prey of juvenile delinquency due to poor education. Education structures a child to differentiate between right and wrong deeds and clarifies. The low-income communities do not possess sufficient financial stability to provide the best education system which opens the path of crime as an alternative for education. Thus, these youths get less access to school, education, jobs, which in turn increases the probability of spending maximum time with antisocial criminal groups (Adelman, Robert, et al 61). Based on the recent report of 2019, it has been identified that the unemployment rate in the U.S. has increased by 3.7% which leads to an increase in unemployed individuals by 87000 to 6 million (Monuteaux, and Michael et al 220). Thus, the higher the rate of unemployment increases the problem of poverty which at the same time leads to depression, and is forced to commit crime. Thus, a child born in a poor family has the highest risk of committing the crime, as they understand that their parents will not be able to provide a luxurious life. This desire makes them look for the opportunity of gaining more money in limited time, and they choose to commit the crime. Furthermore, unequal wealth distribution in the US creates an increased personal income per capita which attracts more thieves and robbers. Hence, it is recommended for the U.S. government to look into the poor crime problem which needs to be addressed. They should not be biased and provided with livable wages to these people through which they can achieve their needs through the legitimate way.

Conclusion

In summary, the report describes that the youth living with poverty are on the higher risk of committing crime leading to juvenile delinquency. It has been identified that the unequal payment system, especially for minorities, is one of the leading causes of poverty. Thus, poverty derives from the quality education, living conditions which in turn induce criminal psychology. The information presented in the report outlines the relationship between poverty and crime and derives the major factors associated with it. As a final note, the harmony in community can be maintained by treating each segment of population equally. Furthermore, the basic educational framework and support must be provided to financially challenged community which in turn can reduce the occurrence of crime in the society.
