Question 1: Briefly describe the conflict that you selected.

Answer: Introduction: Conflict is a dispute or disagreement between two or more individuals having different ideas and opinions. Often, where there is a mismatch between parties with respect to goals, and requirements, the situation can also lead to conflict. Intragroup conflict occurs between two or more members of the same group, while the intergroup conflict occurs between two or more different groups. Conflict occurs due to various reasons such as personality clashes, egos, misunderstanding and disagreement in opinion (Mayer, 2012). One of the examples of intergroup conflict is the RMG sector between the garment owners and garment labours in Bangladesh. This conflict was held in the year 2010, which was based on an issue of poor wages structure (Rubel, Kee, &Rimi, 2017). During this conflict, approximately 100 garment factories paused production since workers were on the riot. The conflict resulted in more than 50 people to be injured, smashed numerous factories, and rocked two garments hubs outside the capital (Rubel, et al. 2017).

Question 2: Briefly describe the needs that each party is or was trying to address in the conflict and explain how they affected the conflict.

Answer: Needs Of Each Party In The Given Conflict: The intergroup conflict in the given case study was due to the difference in the interests of three different parties, which are, trade union (labour), owners, and government. According to Rubel et al (2017), the apparel factory workers wanted a minimum wage fair of Bangladesi currency (Tk) 3000 and 60% of the gross salary to be fixed as basic salary. In addition to this, they required 30% of their salary as housing allowance, and Tk 20 and Tk 12 per day for lunch and transport facilities respectively. They have some additional demands such as maternity leave with half payment of 6 weeks, child care facilities, job security and providing sick leaves. Furthermore, the workers also demanded a hygienic workplace environment having sufficient and clean toilets, dining facilities, and security for women workers. On the contrary, the garment owners want to maintain the existing salary system which is approximately Tk 930 ($13.63) per month (Rubel, et al. 2017). This waging system is one of the lowest in the world and thus acts as a major strength for the Bangladesh garment owners to earn maximum profit. Additionally, the management also forces the worker for overtime, as it is not illegal in the country. In this conflict, the government acts as a third party or mediator and creates a communication link between the owner and the trade union. Despite the fact that government should act impartial, it is more inclined towards the garment owners. In this context, the government pass labour laws which mostly favours the owners.

Question 3: Explain the role of power in the conflict, including if, how, and to what degree power played a part in it.

Answer: Role Of Power In Conflict: In most of the conflicts and negotiation situation, power plays a major role. The group with less power than the other has to lose the battle without any profit (Mayer, 2010). An individual or group in conflict have different forms of power such as reward, affiliation, legitimate, referring, coercive, expert, and informational. In the given case, on the concerned parties have their respective objectives. With the objective to make a profit, the owners use their legitimate power, where they are able to influence others through their positional authority. The conflict is a result of ignorance, read the uneducated labours were cheated by their owners and government (Rubel, et al.2017).

Question 4: Explain how you would expect power to influence-or how it did influence-the outcome of the conflict (its resolution, management, etc.).

Answer: The Personal Perspective On Power Influence: Based on my personal view, the power of garment owners should be used towards the development of the apparel industry, rather than focusing on personal profit. They should not focus on cheating the poor and uneducated workers. Instead, the workers should be provided with adequate training and sufficient wage to motivate towards delivering innovative and qualitative products.
