Introduction: All humans go through various stages of life in terms of growth and development. Along the line of growth and transitioning into one stage from other humans mainly go through five stages starting from early adulthood up to older adulthood. The following sections aim at exploring the sexual transition throughout the family life cycle that a person might go through in his/her life.

Question: Describe the family life-cycle stages.

1. Single adulthood

Answer: Sexual transition in single adulthood: Research papers by McGoldrick and Shibusawa (2012) have shown that adulthood which follows adolescence showcase divergence range of sexual transitions. It has been found out that the people going through the phase of adulthood involve in sexual behaviour while being in a romantic relationship and they consider this as a part of the relationship. But quite strikingly it has also come to notice that their sexual habits are the reason which have brought forth the term Casual Sexual Relationships and Experiences or CSRE. These sexual behaviours are of non-romantic type. Also, most adults of this phase are found to be involved in not only vaginal sexual intercourse but also opt for other methods. Same sex relationship is also common among this population.

2. Committed, long-term relationships

Answer: Sexual transition in Committed Relationship: While in an open or committed relationship, the sexual transition is different. It is in this phase that the people in relationship begin to identify their sexual orientation in a better way. Being in a committed relationship the people often see sexual activities as a means to understand each other. It is commonly found that adults have not been associated with more than one partner after the age of 18 on an average. Often the entering into a stable relationship puts sexual habits behind and people may not even feel comfortable in discussing this particular question. In some people in a committed relationship the frequency of having sex ranges from several times a week to once in a month or lesser than that (Boislard, van de Bongardt and Blais, 2016).

3. Becoming parents

Answer: Sexual transition after becoming parents: After becoming parents, Rossi (2018) suggests that sexual habit of the partners goes through vigorous changes. It seems that partners lose interest on having sexual relationship. Having a row is common in this phase of life as the females, exhausted after giving birth to the little child becomes more engaged in chores. Research have shown that when children or babies are present, sexual relationship hits the bottom and the females often find their male partners to be demanding and rows become very common between the individuals. As per statistical representation, 86% of the common people have relatively lower frequency of sex while 73% have been found to counter their partner and experience sexual interaction with bad mood and hence sexual transition after becoming parents become comparatively scarce.

4. Divorce/relationship termination and remarriage/re-partnering

Answer: Sexual transmission during divorce: According to Amato (2012), it is quite interesting to know how people go through sexual transition when they get a divorce from their so long partner. In the initial stages the people are not really ready to enter into sexual relationship unless they already have a partner. But once divorced, people see this as an opportunity to look around for the variety of sexual partners who might be available to them. In this stage of life cycle sexual relation might not always mean intercourse. Even small touches in a teasing manner bring delight. Erotic massage is also commonly opted for.

5. Older adulthood

Answer: Sexual transmission during older adulthood: Researches have shown that sexual relationship is also important for maintaining the quality of life of the older adults. With the onset of older adulthood a number of complicacies and barriers also arise. Typical problems like erectile dysfunction or painful intercourse begin to onset. Sometimes, failure on one partner's part makes the other one depressive as the thought of not remaining equally interesting occurs among them. Due to onset of menopause, women also go through certain physiological changes which make them reluctant towards sexual behaviour. Sexual transition in older adulthood is often overlooked or a certain taboo is held over it. But psychologists have found out successfully that talking about sexual activities or discomforts regarding it makes it easier to understand the condition and often ease their distress (Williams, Sawyer and Wahlstrom, 2012).

Conclusion: The above sections explore how sexual transitions differ from one stage of family life cycle to other and cause certain transitional changes. This also depicts the importance to know these transitions as these are equally important to maintain the quality of life and live healthily and happily.
