Anxiety and Defense Mechanisms Assignment
Question: Describe two situations in which you have used a defense mechanism.
Description of two situations in which defense mechanisms had been used
Situation 1
A defense mechanism that I had once used was that of denial. Denial is known to be among the most common defense mechanisms, and is used by people who do not want to face the reality.
The situation was, that my pet dog has been missing for over a week, and despite our repeated efforts, no trace of her could be found. Eventually, my dad found out that she had been run over by a speeding car, about a mile from where we lived. My denial kicked in because I could not accept the fact that my beloved dog had been killed, and I refused to believe him, and told him that he must have confused the killed dog with ours. I would sit on the porch everyday waiting for her, because my denial refused to let me accept the fact that she was not going to come back ever.
Denial helped me cope to a great extent, because I feel that I was not in the condition to process the death of my dog whom I loved so dearly. It helped me keep clinging to the hope that she would come back some day instead of making me spiral into full-blown anxiety and depression.

Question: Explain one situation in which you think someone you know was using a defense mechanism.
Situation 2
Another defense mechanism that I had used was that of projection. It is when one attributes the feelings, thoughts and motives onto another person, and these sensations are typically unwanted in nature.
This happened when I started off with college. My first roommate was not exactly what I had in mind, and I developed this idea, that she too hated me. I did not like her very much and would thus do everything possible to avoid interacting with her.
Projection helped me cope with the situation as it made me free from the guilt that would have otherwise arisen from the fact that I hated her without any real reason. Thus, my mind was telling me that there was no need to be so cold towards her, but my coping mechanism made me believe that she too hated me, thus making it easier for me to accept the dislike.
Explanation of one situation where another person was using a defense mechanism
A situation where a person I know was using a defense mechanism was that of a high school friend who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. He was using humor as a means of distracting himself and those around him in order to cope with the anxiety that came with the diagnosis.
His diagnosis had come as a shock to all, as he had seemed quite fine up until his sudden diagnosis. His parents were devastated as the cancer had spread to numerous parts and there were limited options for treatment.
I knew that he was using a defense mechanism because he was surprisingly cheerful and lively when I went to see him. He was behaving like it was no big deal that he was possibly dying, and covered up his anxiety with jokes and lame comments. He even joked about his illness, saying that he was thrilled to receive so much attention. His use of humor indicated that he was using it as a defense mechanism.
